There has been a persistent rumour that cheerleading is banned in Calgary. This is untrue. Strict limitations on more difficult stunts have been imposed by the school system, and like golf, curling and several other common school sports, the Calgary Senior High School Athletics Association (“CSHSAA”) does not sanction competitions in the sport. There is currently a push underway, if we can identify enough qualified coaches and interested schools, to pursue a pilot year for cheerleading in Calgary high schools in the ‘08/’09 season.

Outside of the school system however, cheerleading is booming. There are two major clubs in the city, Calgary Xtreme and the Calgary Stars, as well as efforts by a number of the local gymnastics clubs to initiate their own programs. Many facilities around the city offer cheerleading classes and camps. Both the Calgary Stars and Calgary Xtreme traveled to the Alberta Cheerleading Championships at West Edmonton Mall on March 8th. The Calgary Xtreme adult open team, and the Calgary Xtreme All-Female Quad group placed first in their respective categories. This year was also the first time Calgary had sent a team to compete in the University and Open Nationals in Ontario.
